The small island where John received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation while in exile.

Biblical Significance

John was exiled to Patmos "because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" (Revelation 1:9). On "the Lord's day," he received extraordinary visions of Christ, the seven churches, coming judgments, and the new heaven and new earth. The Book of Revelation was written from this island.

Historical Context

Patmos is a small volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese islands. Under Roman rule, it served as a place of exile for political prisoners. The Cave of the Apocalypse, where tradition says John received his visions, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
