One of the Seven Churches of Revelation, once a wealthy and powerful city that Jesus warned was spiritually dead.

Biblical Significance

Jesus' message to Sardis in Revelation 3:1-6 is sobering: "You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead." Despite appearing spiritually vibrant, the church was warned to wake up and strengthen what remained before it was too late.

Historical Context

Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia and was famous for its wealth, particularly gold from the nearby Pactolus River. The city featured a magnificent temple to Artemis and a Jewish synagogue, one of the largest ancient synagogues ever discovered.
