Biblical Significance

Paul received the "Macedonian call" vision and came to Philippi (Acts 16:9-40). Here Lydia was converted, a slave girl was freed from a demon, and Paul and Silas were imprisoned. After an earthquake freed them, the jailer and his household believed. Paul later wrote his epistle to the Philippians to this church.

Historical Context

Philippi was named after Philip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great) and was later colonized by Rome as a military outpost. The Via Egnatia, the main Roman road connecting East and West, ran through the city.
