Bible Verses for Faith

Hebrews 11:1 gives the classic definition: 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' Biblical faith is not blind belief but confident trust grounded in God's character and past faithfulness. It is the capacity to act on what God has said, even before the outcome is visible. The Greek word pistis (faith) implies trust, fidelity, and confident reliance.

Romans 10:17 explains: 'So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' Faith is not generated by effort or willpower but grows through encounter with God's Word. This is why Scripture reading, preaching, and meditation are so important to the Christian life — they are the means by which faith is built and sustained.

James 2:17 states: 'Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.' James is not contradicting Paul (who teaches salvation by faith, not works) but complementing him. Genuine saving faith inevitably produces visible change — love, obedience, and acts of service. A faith that changes nothing and produces nothing is not the living faith the New Testament describes.
