Le monastère Sainte-Catherine, situé au pied du mont Sinaï en Égypte, est le plus ancien monastère chrétien en fonctionnement continu au monde. Il abrite certains des manuscrits bibliques les plus précieux, dont le Codex Sinaïticus — l'un des plus anciens manuscrits du Nouveau Testament grec — découvert par Constantin von Tischendorf en 1844.
Historical Context
Le monastère Sainte-Catherine fut fondé par l'empereur Justinien Ier entre 527 et 565 apr. J.-C. sur le site traditionnellement associé au Buisson ardent (Exode 3). La bibliothèque du monastère est la deuxième plus grande collection de manuscrits médiévaux après le Vatican. Le Codex Sinaïticus, conservé là jusqu'au XIXe siècle, est aujourd'hui partagé entre la British Library, la Bibliothèque nationale de Russie, la Bibliothèque nationale de Grèce et le monastère lui-même.
