Preguntas frecuentes

What does the Bible say about caring for the sick?
The Bible consistently honors those who care for the sick as doing God's own work. In Matthew 25:36, Jesus says, 'I was sick and you visited me,' identifying himself with those who are suffering. This means that every nurse who checks on a patient in the night, holds a frightened hand before surgery, or explains a diagnosis with patience is, in a very real sense, ministering to Christ. James 5:14 calls the community to pray over the sick and anoint them with oil, showing that healing has always been understood as both a physical and spiritual act. Isaiah 41:10 reminds nurses that they are not working alone: 'I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' God himself is present in every act of nursing care, lending strength when human strength runs out.
How can nurses find strength when they are exhausted and burned out?
Burnout is one of the most serious challenges facing nurses today, and Scripture does not dismiss the reality of exhaustion. Matthew 11:28 contains one of the most direct invitations in all of the Bible: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' Jesus speaks these words to people in demanding labor — and nursing qualifies. Philippians 4:13 adds, 'I can do all this through him who gives me strength,' a promise that divine energy is available even when personal reserves are depleted. The prophet Isaiah understood the cycle of weariness and renewal: 'Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint' (Isaiah 40:31). Bringing your exhaustion honestly to God in prayer — even a brief prayer between patients — opens the channel through which his strength flows.
Is nursing considered a calling in a biblical sense?
Absolutely. Scripture describes work done with excellence and love as an act of worship. Colossians 3:23 says, 'Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.' This reframes every nursing task — from administering medication to changing linens to documenting in a chart — as spiritually significant. Proverbs 31:17 praises one who 'sets about her work vigorously,' and verse 20 adds that she 'opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.' This portrait of purposeful, compassionate service is a portrait of nursing. Beyond that, 1 Corinthians 12 describes healing as a gift given by the Holy Spirit to the body of Christ. Nurses who practice with skill, empathy, and integrity are living out a sacred calling whether they work in a faith-based hospital or a secular clinic.
