One of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries in the world, built at the foot of Mount Sinai near the traditional site of the Burning Bush.

Biblical Significance

The monastery was built at the site traditionally identified as where Moses encountered the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1-6). Inside the monastery walls, a living bush (believed by some to be a descendant of the original) is still shown to pilgrims.

Historical Context

Founded in the 6th century (around 548-565 AD) by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, St. Catherine's Monastery has never been destroyed or closed. It houses an incredible collection of ancient manuscripts, icons, and the purported remains of St. Catherine of Alexandria.
