Youth in the Bible

Throughout Scripture, youth is portrayed not merely as a stage to be endured until maturity but as a season of unique opportunity to know and serve God. The Bible insists that the years of youth are precious in God's sight and that no one is too young to be used by him. The psalmist looks back and testifies, "For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth" (Psalm 71.5). A faith planted early becomes a lifelong anchor, sustaining the believer from childhood to old age. The Preacher gives the central charge to the young: "Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come" (Ecclesiastes 12.1). The vigor and clarity of youth are precisely what make these years ideal for devotion to God, before the burdens and weariness of age arrive. Alongside this comes the call to purity: "How can a young person keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word" (Psalm 119.9). Scripture is the great safeguard for a young heart navigating temptation and choice. The formation of the young is also a deep biblical concern. "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22.6). Early teaching shapes the trajectory of a whole life, which is why parents, mentors, and the church are urged to invest in the young. Finally, the Bible shows that God genuinely calls and commissions the young. When Jeremiah protested, "I am only a youth," the LORD answered, "Do not say, 'I am only a youth'; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go" (Jeremiah 1.7). And Paul tells Timothy, "Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4.12). Youth is never a disqualification before God; it is a field ripe for faith, purity, and bold obedience to his call.
