Yahweh in the Bible

Yahweh is the personal, covenant name of the God of Israel, revealed most fully at the burning bush. When Moses asked for God's name, the LORD answered, "I AM WHO I AM," and told him to say that "I AM has sent me to you" (Exodus 3.14). In the next verse God identifies this name with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, declaring it his name forever and his memorial to all generations (Exodus 3.15). The name, built on the Hebrew verb "to be," expresses God's self-existence, his utter faithfulness, and his active presence with his people. He is not an idea but the living One who exists in himself and gives existence to all things. The name carries the weight of covenant. In Exodus 6.3 God tells Moses that he appeared to the patriarchs as God Almighty (El Shaddai), but by his name Yahweh he had not made himself fully known to them. The revelation of the name therefore signals a new stage of redemption: the God of the promises is about to act to deliver Israel from Egypt. To know the name is to trust the One who keeps his word across generations. Yahweh also reveals his character. Passing before Moses, he proclaims himself "merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34.6). The name is not a magic formula but a self-disclosure of grace and truth. The great confession of Israel gathers it all into one cry: "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deuteronomy 6.4). Finally, Yahweh's name guards his glory and his uniqueness. The psalmist declares that the One whose name alone is Yahweh is the Most High over all the earth (Psalm 83.18), and through Isaiah the LORD says, "I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other" (Isaiah 42.8). To honor the name is to worship the one true God and to refuse every idol that would claim his praise.
