Work and Rest
God Himself established the rhythm of work and rest from the very creation. Genesis 2:2-3 records that "He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done... So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy." This rhythm was later codified in the fourth commandment: "Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God" (Exodus 20:9-10). Rest, therefore, is not laziness but obedience and trust in the God who provides. The Sabbath was not instituted because God was weary, but to set the rhythm of the human week. It reminds us that man is not a machine for producing, but a creature who needs rest, worship, and joy. Jesus confirmed this intent when He declared, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). Work and rest together form a balanced life lived before the Creator. Biblical rest has two dimensions. There is weekly physical rest, and there is spiritual rest in Christ. Jesus invites, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Hebrews 4:9-11 speaks of "a Sabbath rest for the people of God," into which one enters by faith, ceasing from the effort to earn salvation by works. To labor with diligence and to rest with confidence are thus two faces of a single worship offered to the God who both created and redeemed us.
