The Word of Wisdom

The word of wisdom is one of the gifts of the Spirit described in 1 Corinthians 12:8: "To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom." It grants supernatural discernment to know the will of God in a specific situation, to reveal what must come to pass, or to give divine direction at the moment of a decision. It is the very wisdom of God applied supernaturally to a concrete circumstance. King Solomon received a striking manifestation of supernatural wisdom when he judged between the two mothers who claimed the same child (1 Kings 3:16-28): "All Israel... perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice." Likewise, in Acts 15, James received a word of wisdom that resolved the council of Jerusalem and charted the path for the unity of the infant Church. This gift operates in crises, difficult decisions, and moments when human understanding no longer suffices to discern the way of God. This gift must be distinguished from the ordinary wisdom that every believer may ask for. James 1:5 invites us to ask wisdom of God, "who gives generously to all without reproach." That wisdom is accessible through the Word, prayer, and spiritual growth. The word of wisdom, however, is a more specific and occasional manifestation of the Spirit, given for a particular need. It complements the word of knowledge: one reveals facts, the other reveals God's answer and direction, so that His people may walk forward in confidence and obedience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the word of wisdom according to the Bible?
It is a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit that reveals the wisdom of God in a specific situation—not general knowledge of Scripture, but a direct application of the divine will to a particular moment. It complements the word of knowledge: one reveals facts, the other reveals God's answer.
How does the word of wisdom differ from ordinary wisdom?
James 1:5 invites us to ask wisdom of God, "who gives generously to all without reproach." That is the ordinary wisdom accessible through the Word and prayer. The word of wisdom is a more precise and occasional manifestation of the Spirit in moments of particular need.
When does the word of wisdom operate?
It operates especially in crises, difficult decisions, and impasses where human understanding sees no solution. As with Solomon and the council of Jerusalem, God then gives by His Spirit the right direction, for the glory of His name and the good of His people.
