Wonder in the Bible
Wonder is the heart's awed response to the greatness and goodness of God as revealed in His creation and His works. Throughout Scripture, the contemplation of God's handiwork moves the believer from observation to worship, from curiosity to praise. Wonder is not mere amazement; it is reverent astonishment that lifts the soul toward its Maker. The psalmist gazes at the night sky and is overwhelmed: "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:3-4). The vastness of creation makes God's personal care for humanity all the more astonishing. David also declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1), for creation itself is a silent sermon of praise. Wonder also arises from God's saving deeds. "You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you" (Psalm 40:5). The believer cannot count the works of God, and so responds with grateful awe. This wonder turns inward too: "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well" (Psalm 139:14). Even our own bodies testify to the Creator's artistry. Isaiah summons us to look up: "Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name" (Isaiah 40:26). And Job is invited to "stop and consider the wondrous works of God" (Job 37:14). True wonder, then, is a discipline of attentive worship, beholding God's glory in all He has made and done, and bowing in humble, joyful praise.
