Witnessing in the Bible

Witnessing is the joyful calling of God's people to make known His glory and the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. Long before the New Testament, the psalmist invited believers to a global mission of praise: "Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!" (Psalm 96:3). From the beginning, God's people were never meant to keep His greatness to themselves but to proclaim it to a watching world. Jesus taught that witnessing happens not only through words but through a transformed life. "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). A believer's character and conduct become a visible testimony that points beyond themselves to God. Yet the call also includes clear proclamation: in the Great Commission, Jesus commanded His followers to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). Witnessing is not done in our own strength. Before His ascension, Jesus promised, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The Spirit empowers ordinary believers to speak boldly. Paul underscores the urgency and necessity of speaking the gospel: "How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?" (Romans 10:14). And Peter calls believers to be ever ready, "always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). Witnessing, then, is both word and life, offered humbly in the power of the Spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about witnessing?
The Bible calls all believers to witness, declaring God's glory among the nations (Psalm 96:3) and making disciples of all peoples (Matthew 28:19). Witnessing involves both a transformed life that lets our light shine (Matthew 5:16) and clear proclamation of the gospel, done in the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
How can I witness if I feel unqualified or afraid?
Jesus promised in Acts 1:8 that the Holy Spirit gives power to be His witnesses, so witnessing depends on God's strength, not our own ability. Peter encourages us to be prepared to explain our hope "with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). You can begin simply by sharing what Christ has done in your life.
Why is witnessing so important?
Witnessing is essential because faith comes through hearing the gospel. Paul asks, "How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?" (Romans 10:14). People cannot respond to a message they have not received, so God uses the testimony of believers to bring others to know and glorify Him (Matthew 5:16).
