Witchcraft in the Bible

Witchcraft, sorcery, and the occult are addressed with striking consistency throughout Scripture as practices that turn the heart away from the living God toward forbidden spiritual powers. From the earliest law given to Israel, God drew a clear line: "You shall not permit a sorceress to live" (Exodus 22:18). The severity of this command reflects how seriously the Lord regarded any attempt to manipulate hidden powers apart from Him, for such practices rivaled the trust and worship due to God alone. The Mosaic law repeatedly warned the people against turning to mediums and the spirit world. "Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them" (Leviticus 19:31), and the penalty for those who consulted the dead was grave (Leviticus 20:27). Deuteronomy gives a sweeping prohibition: "There shall not be found among you anyone who... practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer" (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). These pagan practices were precisely what God was driving out of the land. Witchcraft is also linked to the deeper sin of rebellion. When Samuel confronted King Saul, he declared, "Rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry" (1 Samuel 15:23). The issue is ultimately the heart's refusal to submit to God's authority. In the New Testament, when the gospel transformed Ephesus, new believers "who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them" (Acts 19:19), a decisive break from the occult. Paul lists "sorcery" among the works of the flesh that exclude people from the kingdom (Galatians 5:20), calling believers instead to walk by the Spirit in wholehearted devotion to Christ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about witchcraft?
The Bible consistently condemns witchcraft, sorcery, and divination as forbidden. Exodus 22:18 and Deuteronomy 18:10-11 prohibit sorcery, mediums, and fortune-telling, while Galatians 5:20 lists sorcery among the works of the flesh. Scripture treats these practices as a turning away from trusting and worshiping the one true God.
Why does God treat witchcraft so seriously?
Witchcraft seeks power and guidance from sources other than God, which is at heart a form of idolatry and rebellion. Samuel told Saul, "Rebellion is as the sin of divination" (1 Samuel 15:23). Leviticus 19:31 warns that turning to mediums makes one unclean. God desires the wholehearted trust of His people, not divided allegiance to hidden powers.
How should Christians respond to occult involvement?
Scripture calls for a decisive, clean break. In Acts 19:19, new believers in Ephesus burned their costly magic books publicly, renouncing the occult entirely. Christians are called to walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5), confess and forsake any such practices, and find true guidance and security in Christ rather than in divination or sorcery.
