Vows in the Bible

A vow in Scripture is a solemn promise made to God, binding the one who makes it to fulfill what has been pledged. The Bible treats vows with great seriousness, because to make a vow is to invoke the name and faithfulness of God as witness. In Numbers 30:2 the law states plainly, 'If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.' This establishes the abiding principle that our words before God carry weight and must be honored. Because vows are weighty, Scripture also warns against making them rashly. Deuteronomy 23:21-23 teaches that 'when thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it,' yet adds that 'if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.' In other words, no one is compelled to make a vow, but once made, it must be kept. 'That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform,' for a vow is a freewill offering to the Lord. Ecclesiastes sounds the same sober note. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 counsels, 'When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.' The wisdom of God urges thoughtful restraint with our promises and faithful follow-through once they are made. Yet vows are not merely a burden; they are also an expression of devotion. In Psalm 61:8 David resolves, 'So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.' For the believer, keeping one's vows becomes a daily act of worship and integrity. Whether in marriage, ministry, or personal commitment, faithfulness to our God-witnessed promises reflects the unchanging faithfulness of the One to whom they are made.
