Turning the Other Cheek in the Bible

Turning the other cheek is one of the most radical of Jesus' sayings: to answer insult and injustice not with retaliation, but with gentleness and dignity. "Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also" (Matthew 5:39). Far from being cowardly passivity, this is the revolutionary strength of the kingdom of God, which overcomes evil with good. In the ancient world, a slap on the right cheek was not first a physical assault but a ritual insult, a way of humiliating. Jesus teaches his disciples not to let themselves be defined by another's contempt, but to act out of their identity as children of God. This does not mean tolerating chronic abuse or surrendering all justice: Jesus himself challenged the unjust treatment inflicted on him before the authorities, asking calmly, "Why smitest thou me?" (John 18:23). To turn the other cheek is to refuse to escalate violence through revenge, to break the cycle of resentment. The apostle Paul gives the summary: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). This attitude is rooted in trust that God is the righteous judge: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19). Thus, to forgive from the heart the one who has wronged us becomes the highest expression of the sovereign freedom Christ gives to his own.
