The Trinity in the Bible

The doctrine of the Trinity confesses that there is one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The word "Trinity" does not appear in Scripture, but the truth it names is woven through the whole Bible. From the opening pages, God speaks of himself in the plural: "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness" (Genesis 1:26), hinting at a fullness within the one divine being. The Bible everywhere insists that God is one, yet it presents Father, Son, and Spirit each as fully God. The deity of the Son is stated unmistakably in John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The Word is distinct from God ("with God") and is himself God. The personhood and deity of the Spirit appear when Jesus promises "another advocate to help you and be with you forever" (John 14:16) β€” another like himself, sent by the Father. The three persons appear together most clearly at Jesus' baptism: the Son rises from the water, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father's voice speaks from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). The New Testament weaves the three names into the church's worship and mission. Jesus commands baptism "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19) β€” one name, three persons. Paul's benediction invokes "the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit" (2 Corinthians 13:14). Peter describes salvation as the work of all three: chosen by the Father, sanctified by the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:2). The Trinity is not a riddle to be solved but the living God to be worshiped β€” one in essence, three in person, eternally united in love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Trinity actually taught in the Bible?
Yes, though the word itself is not used. Scripture affirms God is one, yet presents Father, Son, and Spirit each as fully God. They appear together at Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:16), in his command to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19), and in Paul's blessing in 2 Corinthians 13:14. The doctrine simply gathers these threads into one confession.
How can God be both one and three?
God is one in essence or being, and three in person. Father, Son, and Spirit are not three gods, nor three names for one person, but three distinct persons sharing one divine nature. John 1:1 captures this: the Word was "with God" (distinct) and "was God" (the same in being). It is a truth to be worshiped rather than fully comprehended.
Where does the Bible show all three persons together?
Most vividly at Jesus' baptism, where the Son is in the water, the Spirit descends as a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). They also appear together in the baptismal command of Matthew 28:19, in 2 Corinthians 13:14, and in 1 Peter 1:2, where salvation is the joint work of Father, Spirit, and Son.
