Total Depravity in the Bible

Total depravity is the biblical doctrine that sin has corrupted every part of human nature, the mind, the will, the affections, and the body, so that no part of us is left untouched by the fall. The term "total" does not mean that people are as wicked as they could possibly be, but that sin extends to the whole person, leaving us unable to save ourselves or to please God in our own strength. Scripture lays the foundation for this teaching from the earliest chapters. Genesis 6:5 declares that "every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually," a sweeping verdict on the human condition before the flood. The Psalms confess this corruption personally. In Psalm 51:5 David admits, "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me," tracing sin to the very beginning of life. Psalm 53:3 widens the indictment: "They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one." The prophet Jeremiah exposes the root of the problem in Jeremiah 17:9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" Paul gathers these threads in Romans. Romans 3:10 echoes the Psalmist, "None is righteous, no, not one," and Romans 3:23 concludes, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 8:7 explains the deeper reason: "the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot." Ephesians 2:1 describes the unconverted as "dead in the trespasses and sins." Yet this sober doctrine is not the end of the story; it magnifies grace. Because we are unable to rescue ourselves, salvation must be entirely the gift of God, who makes the dead alive in Christ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does total depravity mean?
Total depravity means sin has affected every part of human nature, mind, will, and affections, not that people are as evil as possible. As Genesis 6:5 and Romans 3:23 show, sin touches the whole person, leaving us unable to save ourselves apart from God's grace.
Which Bible verses teach total depravity?
Key texts include Genesis 6:5, Psalm 51:5, Psalm 53:3, and Jeremiah 17:9 on the corrupt heart, along with Romans 3:10, Romans 3:23, Romans 8:7, and Ephesians 2:1, which describes the unsaved as dead in trespasses and sins.
If we are totally depraved, is there any hope?
Yes. Total depravity magnifies grace. Because Ephesians 2:1 says we are spiritually dead, salvation cannot be earned; it must be God's gift. He makes dead sinners alive in Christ, so the doctrine drives us to rely wholly on his mercy.
