What the Bible Says About Tithing

Tithing, the practice of giving a tenth of one's increase to God, runs throughout Scripture as an expression of worship, gratitude, and trust. It appears even before the Law of Moses. When Abram returned from rescuing Lot, he honored God through Melchizedek, the priest of God Most High, who blessed him, "and Abram gave him a tenth of everything" (GEN.14.20). This earliest tithe was a spontaneous act of thanksgiving to the God who gives victory. Under the Law, tithing was formalized and declared holy: "Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the LORD's; it is holy to the LORD" (LEV.27.30). The tithe belonged to God, acknowledging that all increase comes from His hand. The wisdom literature presents giving to God as a matter of honoring Him with what we value most. "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce" (PRO.3.9). Tithing is not merely a financial transaction but an act of putting God first. Through the prophet Malachi, God issued a striking invitation tied to a promise of blessing: "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse... And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need" (MAL.3.10). Here tithing is bound to trust in God's faithful provision. Jesus affirmed the practice of tithing while warning against a heartless legalism that neglects what matters most. Rebuking the Pharisees, He said they tithed meticulously "and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others" (MAT.23.23). Giving must never replace love, justice, and integrity, but neither should it be abandoned. Finally, Paul lifts giving to the level of joyful, willing generosity: "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2CO.9.7). The biblical pattern of tithing therefore calls believers to honor God with their resources, to trust His provision, to give from the heart, and to remember that generosity flows from gratitude for all He has given.
