What the Bible Says About Therapists and Counseling
While the modern profession of therapy did not exist in biblical times, Scripture has a great deal to say about the care of the brokenhearted, the value of wise counsel, and the ministry of bearing one another's burdens. These principles offer a thoughtful biblical framework for thinking about counseling and the role of therapists today. At the foundation stands the truth that God Himself is the great healer of wounded souls. "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (PSA.34.18), and "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (PSA.147.3). Any genuine healing of the heart is ultimately God's gift, and good counsel points sufferers toward His comfort. Scripture repeatedly affirms the wisdom of seeking counsel rather than struggling alone. Proverbs teaches, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety" (PRO.11.14). Seeking help from wise, godly people is not weakness but prudence. The Bible also recognizes the heavy weight that anxiety and grief place on the soul and the power of encouraging words to lift it: "Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad" (PRO.12.25). A skilled and compassionate counselor can speak such good words. Proverbs even compares heartfelt counsel to a fragrant gift: "Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel" (PRO.27.9). The New Testament gives this caring ministry a name and a command. "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (GAL.6.2). Believers are called to come alongside the suffering, to listen, to encourage, and to help carry what is too heavy to bear alone. Wise counseling, whether offered by pastors, friends, or trained therapists who honor God's truth, can be a means through which this command is fulfilled. The Bible therefore neither idolizes nor dismisses counseling. It encourages seeking godly wisdom, values the comfort of caring relationships, and grounds all true healing in the Lord who is near to the brokenhearted. Those who help others carry their burdens participate in a deeply biblical work of love.
