What the Bible Says About Theological Training
Theological training is the disciplined process by which believers learn to understand, live, and teach the truth of God's word. Far from being reserved for an elite, Scripture commends the pursuit of wisdom to all who fear the Lord, while giving special attention to those called to teach. Proverbs captures the humble, teachable spirit at the heart of true learning: "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning" (PRO.9.9). The wise are marked not by knowing everything but by their eagerness to grow. Theological training often happens in relationship, as mature believers instruct others. When Apollos, an eloquent preacher, knew only part of the truth, "Priscilla and Aquila... took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately" (ACT.18.26). This shows that even gifted teachers need fuller instruction, and that sound training can come through humble, faithful disciples. Such learning is meant to transform, not merely inform. Paul urges, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind" (ROM.12.2). Genuine theological training renews the mind so that the believer can discern and do the will of God. The goal of training is faithful handling of Scripture. Paul charges Timothy, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth" (2TI.2.15). This requires diligence, study, and care to interpret the Bible accurately. The sufficiency of Scripture for this task is grounded in its divine origin: "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2TI.3.16). The Bible itself is the curriculum and the standard. Finally, theological training prepares leaders to guard and proclaim the truth. An elder must "hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it" (TIT.1.9). Sound teaching equips the church to stand against error and to build up believers in the faith. Theological training, then, is not academic pride but loving service: knowing God truly, being transformed by His word, and faithfully passing that truth to others.
