Prayers of Thanksgiving

The prayer of thanksgiving is the verbal expression of a heart filled with gratitude toward God. The Psalms overflow with it — from Psalm 100 to Psalm 136 — and Paul teaches believers to wrap every prayer in gratitude: "in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:6). Such prayer does not depend on perfect circumstances: it rises in the very heart of suffering. Job, having lost everything, can still declare: "the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD" (Job 1:21). Paul and Silas, their feet fast in the stocks at the bottom of a prison, sing praises to God (Acts 16:25). Jesus himself, before the tomb of Lazarus, lifts his eyes and says: "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me" (John 11:41). Giving thanks in prayer is thus an act of faith that proclaims the goodness of God even when it is not yet seen. James adds that "the prayer of faith shall save the sick," so that believers confess and pray for one another (James 5:15-16), and Solomon at the temple pleads that God would hearken to the prayer of his servant (1 Kings 8:28; 2 Chronicles 6:19). Thanksgiving psalms often follow a recognizable structure: they call upon God, declare the intention to thank him, recall his works, then praise his character. Psalm 136 repeats like a refrain "for his mercy endureth for ever." Beginning our prayers with gratitude recalibrates the heart: it reminds us that God has already acted, that he is good and faithful, and it prepares the soul to ask and to receive.
