The Spiritual Gift of Teaching
The spiritual gift of teaching is the ability granted by the Holy Spirit to explain, interpret, and apply the Word of God in such a way that others understand it and are transformed (Romans 12:7). Teachers so endowed are gifts that Christ gives to his Church for its edification, correction, and the growth of the whole body. Paul lists the gift of teaching among the gifts of grace in Romans 12:7, and again in 1 Corinthians 12:28, where he places teachers among the ministries God has appointed in the Church. The one who possesses this gift does not merely transmit information: he illumines Scripture, connects truth to concrete life, and equips believers to think biblically. This gift must be distinguished from the ordinary teaching to which all are called — parents toward their children, mature believers toward new converts. The spiritual gift of teaching is an extraordinary endowment of the Spirit, conferring a particular discernment of Scripture, clarity of expression, and the capacity to transform the hearer's understanding so as to produce genuine growth. Such a gift is not exercised without effort: it is developed through diligent study of the Word, for Paul exhorts us to "do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). Prayer, the humility to learn from other teachers, and the faithful practice of teaching, in large assemblies as in small circles, strengthen this gift for the good of the Church.
