What the Bible Says About Teachability

Teachability is the humble willingness to receive instruction, correction, and counsel, and Scripture presents it as one of the surest marks of a wise and godly heart. The opposite of teachability is pride, which closes the ears and hardens against rebuke. Throughout the Bible, those who prosper spiritually are consistently those who remain open to being taught, first by God and then by the wise people He places around them. The Psalms ground teachability in humility before God. Psalm 25:9 says, "The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way." Notice that it is the meek, not the self-assured, whom God instructs. Psalm 32:8 records God's tender promise, "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye." Divine guidance is offered to those willing to be led. The book of Proverbs develops teachability as a practical discipline of the wise. Proverbs 1:5 declares, "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning," showing that wisdom is never finished growing. Proverbs 9:9 adds, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser," because the teachable person treats correction as a gift rather than an insult. Proverbs also warns of the cost of refusing to learn. Proverbs 12:1 is blunt: "Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish." To reject correction is to reject knowledge itself. Proverbs 19:20 gives the path forward: "Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end." Teachability, then, is not weakness but the very posture by which a soul grows. It begins with reverent dependence on God, who teaches the humble His ways, and continues in a lifelong readiness to learn from Scripture, from wise counsel, and even from rebuke. The teachable believer keeps growing all the way to the end.
