The Synagogue in the Bible

The synagogue was the center of Jewish religious life in the centuries surrounding the New Testament, serving as a place of Scripture reading, prayer, teaching, and community. Though the temple in Jerusalem remained the place of sacrifice, synagogues arose in towns and cities throughout Israel and the wider Roman world as local gathering places where the Law and the Prophets were read and expounded. The Gospels show that the synagogue was central to Jesus' public ministry. Matthew records that Jesus "went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom" (Matthew 4:23). The synagogue was where He met the people week by week. Luke gives us a vivid picture of Jesus' custom: "He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read" (Luke 4:16). There He read from Isaiah and announced the fulfillment of prophecy. Jesus also pointed to the synagogue as a place of open, public teaching when He told the high priest, "I have spoken openly to the world... I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together" (John 18:20). His teaching was never secret. In the book of Acts, the synagogue became the launching point for the spread of the gospel. Paul made it his strategy to begin in the synagogue of each city he entered. At Pisidian Antioch, "on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down" (Acts 13:14). In Thessalonica, "as was his custom, Paul went in, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures" (Acts 17:2). At Corinth, "he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks" (Acts 18:4). The synagogue thus stands as a bridge between Old and New Covenant worship, a place where the Word was honored and where the message of Christ was first proclaimed to the Jewish people and the God-fearing Gentiles who gathered there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the synagogue in the Bible?
The synagogue was the local center of Jewish worship, prayer, and Scripture reading in New Testament times. Jesus taught in synagogues throughout Galilee (Matthew 4:23), and as Luke 4:16 records, it was His custom to attend on the Sabbath and read from the Scriptures.
Why did Jesus teach in synagogues?
The synagogue was where the people gathered to hear the Law and Prophets, so it was a natural place for public teaching. Jesus told the high priest that He had always taught openly in synagogues and the temple, hiding nothing (John 18:20).
How did Paul use synagogues to spread the gospel?
Paul regularly began his ministry in each city's synagogue, reasoning from the Scriptures. He did so at Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13:14), in Thessalonica over three Sabbaths (Acts 17:2), and at Corinth every Sabbath (Acts 18:4), persuading Jews and Greeks about Jesus.
