The Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God

The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, the only offensive weapon in the believer's armor (Ephesians 6:17). Unlike the other pieces of the spiritual armor described by Paul, which are all defensive — the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness — the sword of the Spirit attacks. It overturns lies, repels temptations, and sets captives free by the living and active truth of Scripture. The Greek word used in Ephesians 6:17 is rhema, the Word spoken and applied to a specific situation, and not merely the Bible left on a shelf. Jesus himself wielded this sword in the wilderness: at each of Satan's three temptations, he answered "It is written" (Matthew 4:1-11), countering every lie with a text fitted to it. The epistle to the Hebrews describes this Word as "sharper than any double-edged sword," penetrating to the division of soul and spirit, judging the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). For the believer, to memorize and meditate on Scripture is to sharpen the sword before the hour of battle. So armed, he stands firm against the tempter, not by his own reasoning, but by the Word of God received in faith and applied with precision in the trial. The Word does not merely defend; through it the believer tears down strongholds of falsehood (2 Corinthians 10:4-5) and proclaims the truth that sets free (John 8:32).
