Pouring Out the Heart in Supplication

Supplication is the most intense and urgent form of prayer: it is the cry of the soul that recognizes its absolute dependence and draws near with confidence to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). The Bible is filled with prayers of supplication β€” those of David, Nehemiah, Daniel, and Jesus himself β€” to which God responds in his time and according to his perfect will. The term evokes the posture of one who bends the knee, aware of weakness, and pleads for the help of the Almighty. Far from being a mark of spiritual weakness, supplication is the expression of an active faith that leans on the mercy of God. The apostle Paul joins petition and supplication when he exhorts: "In every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). The psalmist testifies to the Lord's attentive listening: "I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live" (Psalm 116:1-2). Supplication is not about bending a reluctant God, but about coming just as we are, in our need, to a Father who delights to give. Hebrews 4:16 invites us: "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Thus the tested believer learns to turn anxiety into persevering prayer, laying every burden before the One who is able to help and to save.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is supplication, and how does it differ from ordinary prayer?
Supplication (from the Latin supplicare, to bend the knee) is an urgent and fervent request made to God in moments of deep need. Philippians 4:6 joins the two: "By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Supplication is the intensity of the request when the need is great.
Does God always answer the supplications of his people?
God hears every sincere supplication and answers according to his perfect will. Psalm 116:1-2 declares: "I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me..." Sometimes he answers as we ask, sometimes in a different and better way, but he always answers in love.
Which biblical figures teach us about supplication?
David in the Psalms, Nehemiah before the ruin of Jerusalem, Daniel fasting for his people (Daniel 9), and Jesus himself at Gethsemane who "offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears" (Hebrews 5:7). Their example shows a supplication that is persevering, humble, and confident in the goodness of God.
