What the Bible Says About Suicide

The Bible never speaks of suicide with cold judgment, but with the tender compassion of a God who draws near to the broken. Scripture affirms that life is a sacred gift entrusted by God, who alone is its giver and sustainer. Moses pleads in Deuteronomy 30:19, "I have set before you life and death... therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live." Job, in the depths of unimaginable loss, still confesses, "The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD" (Job 1:21). Our days are held in God's hands, and taking the life He gave is contrary to His design. The body itself is sacred: "you are God's temple" (1 Corinthians 3:16), and "your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Yet the Bible's deepest word to the suicidal is not condemnation but nearness. Psalm 34:18 promises, "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." God does not stand at a distance from despair; He moves toward it. To the soul drowning in darkness, Psalm 42:11 gives words to pray honestly through the pain: "Why are you cast down, O my soul... Hope in God; for I shall again praise him." Despair lies; God's faithfulness outlasts the darkest night.
