Stringed Instruments in Worship

Stringed instruments — the harp, the lyre, and the lute — accompanied the worship of Israel from the days of David onward. The shepherd-king turned psalmist used them to praise God first in the tabernacle and later in the temple, inviting all the people to join him: "Praise him with the sounding of the harp and lyre" (Psalm 150:3-4). Instrumental music thus became an offering of art to the Creator, who gave humanity the creativity needed to shape beauty and present it back to him in worship. Far from being mere ornamentation, this music supports and lifts up the worship of the whole congregation. David himself organized the temple musicians and appointed the Levites charged with playing stringed instruments to lead the people in adoration (1 Chronicles 25). David's skill on the harp was already renowned before his reign: when he played, Saul found relief and the tormenting spirit departed from him (1 Samuel 16:23). Later, at the dedication of Solomon's temple, the Levites stood "with cymbals, harps and lyres" to celebrate the Lord (2 Chronicles 5:12). Scripture finally calls all creation to praise God with every instrument: "Praise him with the sounding of the harp and lyre... praise him with the strings and pipe" (Psalm 150:3-4). Sacred music played on strings elevates the spirit and glorifies the Creator, for God deserves the very best of human art. When believers offer their craft and skill in worship, the melody becomes a vessel for devotion that words alone cannot carry.
