Storge Love in the Bible

Storge describes the natural, familial affection that unites parents and children, brothers and sisters, and the members of one household. This Greek word denotes the spontaneous tenderness of blood ties, the instinctive inclination by which a father and mother cherish their child and by which the members of a family care for one another. Although the term storge does not appear directly in the New Testament, the reality it describes is deeply valued there. Paul, describing the moral decay of a humanity given over to itself, lists among the gravest signs the state of being "without natural affection" (Romans 1:31): the absence of this familial love is presented as a mark of corruption. Conversely, Scripture honors domestic bonds as a place where one learns to love, to forgive, and to grow in grace. The family is thus a school of love, where ties of flesh reflect, in their measure, the love of the heavenly Father. It is within this setting that Paul commands children to obey their parents and fathers not to provoke their children, but to bring them up "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:1-4). Storge, a gift of God woven into human nature, comes to full flower when it is sanctified by the other forms of love that Scripture brings to light: friendship, unconditional love, and married love.
