Stewardship in the Bible

Stewardship is the biblical conviction that everything we possess belongs ultimately to God, and that we are entrusted to manage His gifts faithfully for His glory. The foundation is laid in creation itself. In Genesis 1:28 God blesses humanity and commissions them to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion" over its creatures. This dominion is not exploitation but caretaking, a delegated responsibility to govern the world on God's behalf. The reason is declared plainly in Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein." Because God owns all things, we are stewards rather than owners, accountable to Him for how we use what He has lent us. Jesus taught extensively about faithful stewardship through parables. In the parable of the talents, the master commends the faithful servant in Matthew 25:21 with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master." Faithfulness in stewardship is rewarded with greater trust and joy. Jesus also taught that stewardship is proven in small things. In Luke 16:10 He says, "One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much," and in Luke 16:11 He asks how those unfaithful with worldly wealth can be trusted with true riches. How we handle money and possessions reveals the integrity of our hearts. The apostles applied this principle to every gift God gives. In 1 Corinthians 4:2 Paul declares the basic requirement: "It is required of stewards that they be found faithful." Stewardship is measured not by results alone but by faithfulness. Peter broadens the scope to spiritual gifts in 1 Peter 4:10, urging each believer to "use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." Thus stewardship embraces our time, money, talents, the creation, and the gifts of the Spirit, all to be managed faithfully until the Master returns to settle accounts.
