Spiritual Weapons in the Bible

The weapons with which the believer fights are not carnal; they are "mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds" (2 Corinthians 10:4). Paul is careful to make this clear, for the Christian is tempted to resort to human means to wage a battle that is first of all spiritual: "though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal" (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). The power therefore does not reside in the believer himself, but in God. The apostle adds that these weapons serve to cast down "imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God": it is a matter of demolishing the arguments and reasonings that rise up against the truth. Scripture displays an entire divine arsenal: the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17); prayer in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18); the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16); praise, by which God once gave victory to Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:22); the name of Jesus (Mark 16:17); and the blood of the Lamb, by which the redeemed overcome the accuser (Revelation 12:11). These instruments far surpass every human strategy. The Word is a two-edged sword, prayer an effective force, and faith moves mountains—not by our might, but by the power of him who fights for us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the believer's spiritual weapons?
The chief weapons are: the sword of the Spirit (the word of God, Ephesians 6:17), prayer in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), faith as a shield (Ephesians 6:16), praise (2 Chronicles 20:22), the name of Jesus (Mark 16:17), and the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 12:11).
Why are spiritual weapons mightier than carnal ones?
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 explains: "though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." The power comes from God, not from the believer.
What is the purpose of these spiritual weapons?
They serve to cast down "imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God" (2 Corinthians 10:5). The aim is to demolish arguments contrary to the truth, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
