Spiritual Hunger in the Bible
Spiritual hunger is the soul's deep longing for God, for His Word, and for His presence. Jesus Himself declares it blessed: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6). This beatitude overturns the values of the world: it is not the satisfied who is blessed, but the hungry, for his hunger will be filled by God. Psalm 42:1-2 expresses this longing with unmatched poetic beauty: "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God." Psalm 63:1 prolongs this cry: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee." Spiritual hunger is itself a sign of authentic spiritual life, for dead souls feel no hunger. Far from being a problem, this unsatisfied longing is a gift: if you yearn for more of God, it is because He is already at work in your heart to draw you to Himself. This hunger can, however, fall asleep when the soul fills itself with other things. To revive it, fasting creates space for God, silence reduces the noise of the world, and sincere prayer asks, "Lord, give me hunger for You."
