Spiritual Adulthood in the Bible

Spiritual adulthood is not perfection but solidity: the capacity to stand firm in the faith through the storms of life. Hebrews 6:1 exhorts believers to "go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation," that is, to move beyond the first principles into a deeper understanding. Ephesians 4:13-15 describes the mature person in Christ as one who is no longer "tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine," but who, "speaking the truth in love," grows up in all things into Him who is the head, even Christ. Spiritual maturity is recognized by several marks: a deep love for God and neighbor, the visible manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit, the capacity for biblical discernment, and the ability to serve and disciple others. Galatians 5:22-23 lists this fruit: "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance." Maturity does not arrive all at once; it is the fruit of years of walking with God, of sins confessed, of grace received, and of trials passed through. Every day of faithfulness is a stone added to the building. The means God has ordained for reaching it are the regular study of Scripture (2 Timothy 2:15), constant prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17), committed Christian community (Hebrews 10:24-25), and active service. In this way the believer grows up into the fullness of life in Christ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if I am growing spiritually?
Signs of maturity include less reactivity to offenses, a growing love for one's enemies, increasing humility, the ability to discern God's will, and a readiness to serve without recognition. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit that accompanies maturity.
What practices accelerate growth toward maturity?
The regular study of Scripture (2 Timothy 2:15), constant prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17), committed Christian community (Hebrews 10:24-25), active service (Ephesians 4:11-12), and passing through trials with faith (James 1:2-4) are the means God has ordained.
Does spiritual maturity mean the absence of sin?
No. Hebrews 6:1 speaks of pressing on toward perfection as a journey, not a state already attained. Maturity is solidity in the faith and constant growth in Christ, not sinlessness. The mature believer acknowledges his weaknesses and leans all the more on the grace of God.
