Deep Sorrow in the Bible

Deep sorrow, that pain which seems to have no bottom, is an experience the greatest men of God have known. Job lost everything and groaned in the dust, cursing the day of his birth. David wrote his psalms of lamentation from the abyss, crying out, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). Jeremiah was called the weeping prophet, mourning over the ruin of Jerusalem in the book of Lamentations. Even Jesus, in Gethsemane, confessed, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death" (Matthew 26:38). Deep sorrow is therefore not a sign of unbelief; it can be the very place where the soul learns to anchor its hope in God when nothing else can sustain it. The psalms of lamentation do not always end with answers, but almost all of them lead to trust. Psalm 34:18 promises that the LORD "is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." Isaiah 43:2 assures us, "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee." God does not erase the valley, but He walks through it with us, and His presence transforms the darkest pain. The path through deep sorrow is not to avoid suffering, but to pass through it hand in hand with God, until the dawn returns.

Key verse snapshot
