Jesus the Son of God in the Bible
That Jesus is the Son of God stands at the very heart of the Christian faith. The title is not a metaphor for a good man or a great teacher; it is the Bible's declaration that Jesus shares the eternal nature of God the Father. The opening line of Mark's Gospel announces it as the theme of the whole story: "The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God" (Mark 1:1). Everything that follows is the unfolding of that claim. The Father Himself testified to the Son. At Jesus' baptism, "a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased'" (Matthew 3:17). This fulfilled the royal promise of the Psalms, where God declares, "You are my son; today I have become your father" (Psalm 2:7), a verse the writer to the Hebrews applies to Christ alone: "For to which of the angels did God ever say, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father'?" (Hebrews 1:5). No angel, no prophet, only Jesus bears this name. This truth demands a response of faith and confession. Peter spoke for the church when he declared, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16), and John the Baptist testified, "I have seen and I testify that this is God's Chosen One" (John 1:34). The apostle John makes confession the mark of true fellowship: "If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God" (1 John 4:15). At the center of it all is the Father's love displayed in the giving of His Son. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). To know Jesus as the Son of God is to receive that love, to confess Him as Lord, and to enter eternal life through the One whom the Father loves and gave for us.
