Singleness in the Bible
Singleness is presented in Scripture not as a deficiency or a waiting room for marriage, but as a genuine and honorable calling that can be lived fully for the Lord. The Apostle Paul, himself unmarried, spoke of singleness as a gift: "I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that" (1 Corinthians 7:7). He addressed the unmarried and widows directly, saying, "It is good for them if they abide even as I" (1 Corinthians 7:8). Far from disparaging the single life, Paul commended it as a state in which a believer can serve God with rare freedom. The central blessing Paul identifies is undistracted devotion. "He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:32), and the unmarried woman "careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit" (1 Corinthians 7:34). Singleness can free the heart and the schedule for concentrated ministry, prayer, and service that marriage, with its rightful responsibilities, may not allow. Jesus likewise affirmed those who remain single "for the kingdom of heaven's sake" (Matthew 19:12), treating celibacy as a worthy path for those given grace to walk it. Scripture also speaks tenderly to the longings of the single believer. The psalmist invites, "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart" (Psalm 37:4)—a promise that God Himself satisfies the deepest hungers of the soul. Isaiah declares that "thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name" (Isaiah 54:5), reminding every believer that ultimate belonging and covenant love are found in God. Taken together, these passages dignify singleness as a season or vocation of fruitful devotion. Whether temporary or lifelong, the single life is a place where one may delight in the Lord, serve Him wholeheartedly, and rest secure in His covenant love.
