Single Parents in the Bible

The Bible looks upon single parents and their children with a tender and particular love. The story of Hagar in Genesis 21 shows a mother abandoned in the wilderness, at the end of her strength, convinced that her son was about to die. Yet God opened her eyes and revealed to her a well of water she had not been able to see, and "God was with the lad, and he grew." Psalm 68:5 describes the LORD as "a father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows." Single parents carry an immense responsibility: they bear at once the role of provider, teacher, and protector. Even so, God does not leave them alone; He promises to be the Father their children need and the support of their households. Isaiah 54:5 declares, "For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name." Philippians 4:19 assures us that God will supply every need "according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Scripture also calls the community of believers to surround these families: Galatians 6:2 exhorts us to "bear ye one another's burdens." The Church, the body of Christ, thus becomes the extended family that walks alongside, sustains, and comforts. If you are raising your children alone, know that God sees your love, your effort, and your sleepless nights. He fills the gaps left by absence and walks faithfully beside you.
