Sin in the Bible

Sin is any transgression of God's law, a falling short of His glory, and a rebellion of the heart against its Creator. The Bible presents sin not merely as isolated wrong acts but as a condition that touches every person and corrupts the whole of human nature. Understanding what Scripture says about sin is essential, for only those who grasp the disease will treasure the remedy God provides in Christ. The Bible declares the universal reach of sin: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). It entered the world through one man and spread to all: "by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5:12). No one can claim innocence, for "if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8). Sin is also deadly in its progression: "when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death" (James 1:15), and its ultimate wage is plain: "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). The deepest tragedy of sin is that it separates us from a holy God: "your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you" (Isaiah 59:2). Yet the Bible never leaves us in despair. The same verse that names death as sin's wage continues, "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). And to all who come honestly to God there is a sure promise: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). The doctrine of sin, then, drives us to the cross, where Christ bore our sin so that we might be forgiven, cleansed, and restored to fellowship with God.
