Being Still Before the Lord

Silence before God is a spiritual discipline that few practice but that the Bible esteems deeply. Psalm 46:10 invites: "Be still, and know that I am God." Zechariah 2:13 exhorts: "Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD." Silence is not emptiness: it is the space where the soul can finally hear what constant noise prevents it from perceiving. In a world saturated with words and agitation, to fall silent before God becomes an act of faith and trust. Elijah's experience at Mount Horeb illustrates this truth. The prophet met God not in the great wind, nor in the earthquake, nor in the fire, but in "a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12). God often reveals Himself not in the uproar but in the quiet, where the heart grows calm and attentive. Silence thus prepares true listening. Habakkuk 2:20 declares: "But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him." Silence is first of all a posture of reverence: it acknowledges the greatness of God and the smallness of man. Psalm 62:1-2 adds: "Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation." To be silent before God is not to seek to enter into nothingness, but to open oneself to His fullness. There prayer becomes listening, and listening becomes communion. The believer need not fill that silence; it is enough to let it work within him.
