Signs and Wonders in the Bible
Signs and wonders in the Bible are the visible, powerful acts of God that authenticate his message and reveal his glory. They are never mere spectacle; throughout Scripture they point beyond themselves to the One who performs them, confirming the truth of the gospel and the identity of Jesus as the Son of God. John makes the purpose explicit at the close of his Gospel: "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ" (John 20:30-31). The miracles are signposts directing faith toward Christ. Jesus promised that his works would continue through his followers. "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father" (John 14:12). After Pentecost this promise unfolded visibly: "awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles" (Acts 2:43), and "by the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people" (Acts 5:12). The early church bore witness not only in word but in demonstrations of God's power. These signs were always tied to the proclamation of the gospel and the glory of Jesus' name. The believers prayed, "stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus" (Acts 4:30). Jesus himself foretold, "these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons" (Mark 16:17). The focus is always the name and authority of Christ, never the performer. Hebrews 2:4 gives the theological summary: God bore "witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will." Signs and wonders confirm the message of salvation, but they remain God's sovereign gift, given according to his purpose. Scripture therefore invites us to marvel not merely at the wonders themselves, but at the God who works them and the gospel they confirm.
