Feet Shod with the Gospel of Peace
Ephesians 6:15 describes one of the pieces of the armor of God: "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace." The shoes of the gospel ready the believer to set out, to carry the good news wherever he goes. The Roman soldier wore studded sandals that gave him a firm footing in battle; in the same way, the believer stands firm in the peace of the gospel and advances with the mission to proclaim it. This image is not incidental: it binds inner steadfastness and missionary mobility into a single spiritual reality. Isaiah 52:7 already announced this truth: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace." The prophet celebrates the feet of the messenger, for they are what carry hope to the ends of the earth. Romans 10:15 takes up this text to remind us that faith comes by preaching: "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace." To be shod with the gospel, then, is to stand ready to answer the call. The peace Paul speaks of is not merely the absence of conflict: it is peace with God obtained through the cross (Romans 5:1). When the believer walks on this foundation, he no longer fears the adversary, for his feet are made firm on the rock of reconciliation. The gospel of peace becomes both the protection and the propulsion of his life. To stand firm and to advance are not two contrary movements but one single faithfulness.
