Shame and Dignity Restored in Christ
Shame is one of the most paralyzing emotions a human being can experience. It goes beyond mere guilt: guilt says "I did wrong," while shame whispers "I am bad." Ever since Genesis 3, shame has entered the world with sin: Adam and Eve "were afraid and hid themselves" after disobeying, aware of their nakedness and their estrangement from God. But the gospel strikes at shame to its very root. Romans 10:11 promises: "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." Isaiah 54:4 adds this comfort: "Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced." At the cross, Jesus "despised the shame" (Hebrews 12:2); he bore our shame so that we might walk in the dignity of the children of God. Identity in Christ is therefore the antidote to shame. Romans 8:1 declares: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." The one who is united to the Savior no longer needs to hide, for his life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). Healing from shame comes through confession and forgiveness (1 John 1:9), through the renewal of the mind in the light of truth, and through a safe community where one can be authentic without fear of judgment. Where shame imprisons, grace sets free and lifts up the head once more.
