What the Bible Says About Sexuality
Sexuality is a good gift woven into the fabric of creation, and the Bible treats it with profound dignity and purpose. From the very beginning, human sexuality is rooted in the image of God: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). Maleness and femaleness are not accidents of biology but reflections of God's intentional design, and the complementarity of man and woman lies at the heart of the biblical vision of sexuality. Marriage is presented as the covenant context in which sexual union finds its fullest meaning. God's word at creation establishes the pattern: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Jesus affirmed this same design when He taught, "the two shall become one flesh" (Matthew 19:5), grounding marriage in God's original purpose rather than mere social custom. Sexual intimacy is thus designed to express and seal a lifelong, exclusive covenant. Because sexuality is so good and powerful, Scripture surrounds it with both honor and protection. "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled" (Hebrews 13:4). The marriage bed is celebrated, not disparaged, while sexual expression outside that covenant is treated as a betrayal of God's design. Paul, addressing the realities of human desire, writes, "because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband" (1 Corinthians 7:2), commending marriage as God's good provision. The call to holiness runs throughout. Paul urges believers to "flee from sexual immorality" (1 Corinthians 6:18), and he reminds them that "this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality" (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Far from being repressive, the biblical view of sexuality honors the body, celebrates marriage, and invites believers into a life of purity that reflects the faithfulness of God. Sexuality, rightly understood, is a sphere of worship, where God's good design points beyond itself to the covenant love of Christ for His people.
