What the Bible Says About Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is a grievous violation that the Bible neither ignores nor minimizes. Scripture honestly records such evil and consistently places God on the side of the wounded. The tragic account of Tamar, who was violated by her half-brother Amnon, shows the Bible's unflinching realism: "being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her" (2 Samuel 13:14). The narrative does not excuse the abuser or blame the victim; it names the act as a wicked outrage, giving voice to the anguish of the abused and exposing the failure of those who should have protected her. The heart of God toward survivors is tender and near. "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). Far from standing aloof, God draws close to those whose dignity has been shattered. He is also a refuge from oppression: "The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9). For anyone carrying the wounds of abuse, these promises affirm that they are seen, valued, and held by a God who does not despise their pain. God's law took the protection of the vulnerable seriously and assigned guilt where it belonged. In the case of a woman assaulted in the open country, the law declared, "you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death" (Deuteronomy 22:26), because "the man met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her" (Deuteronomy 22:25). The victim is explicitly declared innocent, and the responsibility laid squarely on the perpetrator. Scripture also calls God's people to action and warns wrongdoers of accountability. "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute" (Proverbs 31:8) summons believers to advocate for the voiceless and defend the abused. And Paul warns that "the Lord is an avenger in all these things" (1 Thessalonians 4:6), assuring survivors that no abuse escapes God's justice. The Bible thus combines comfort for the wounded, vindication of the innocent, a call to protect the vulnerable, and the certainty that God will judge all wrong.
