Servant Love in the Bible

Servant love is the love that expresses itself through selfless service. John 13 recounts how Jesus, knowing that he was the Son of God who had come from the Father, rose from the table, took a towel, and washed his disciples' feet. This act, reserved for the lowliest of servants, reveals the very heart of God. Jesus then declared: "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:26). Servant love seeks neither recognition nor power; it seeks the good of the other. It is the love that stoops low to lift others up, in imitation of Christ who "took the form of a servant" and emptied himself (Philippians 2:7). Mark 10:45 sums up this calling in the Savior's own words: "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This love is the antidote to the culture of "me first." It combines agape, the self-giving love of God, with concrete, everyday service. Galatians 5:13 exhorts believers: "Through love serve one another." In marriage, in the church, at work, servant love is practiced by choosing the needs of others before one's own. Every humble act of service thus becomes a living proclamation of the gospel and a growing resemblance to Jesus, who measured greatness not by dominion but by the willingness to kneel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is servant love according to the Bible?

How do you practice servant love day to day?
Galatians 5:13 says: "Through love serve one another." This love is practiced by choosing the needs of others before your own: in marriage, the church, at work. Small, consistent acts of service build the character of Christ within us.
Why did Jesus wash his disciples' feet?
In John 13:14-15, after washing their feet, Jesus said: "I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you." This act teaches that true greatness in the kingdom is measured by humility and service, not by domination.
