The Fruit of Self-Control
In Galatians 5:22-23, the apostle Paul completes his list of the fruit of the Spirit with "self-control." This final place is no accident: it is the fruit that makes all the others possible. Without self-control, love collapses into sentimentality, peace degenerates into indolence, and patience is confused with resignation. Self-control as a fruit of the Spirit is qualitatively different from human stoicism: it does not suppress the emotions, it governs them; it does not deny desires, it aligns them with the will of God. Because it is produced by the Spirit who dwells in the believer (John 14:17), and not by the effort of the flesh alone, it bears the mark of grace. Galatians 5:16 reveals its secret: "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." This fruit ripens slowly, through daily choices: every time the believer says no to what draws him away from God, the fruit grows; every time he says yes to the Word, it is strengthened. Scripture names specific areas where this fruit is tested: the taming of the tongue (James 3:2-10), the management of anger (Ephesians 4:26), sexual purity (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5), and bodily discipline (1 Corinthians 9:27). Where this fruit grows, both the believer's life and witness are transformed.
