Satan in the Bible

Satan is the personal name the Bible gives to the chief adversary of God and his people. The word means "accuser" or "adversary," and Scripture presents him not as a myth or symbol but as a real, fallen spiritual being who opposes the Lord and seeks the ruin of humanity. The book of Revelation gathers his many titles together: "the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world" (Revelation 12:9). He is a created being who rebelled, not an equal rival to God. Jesus exposed Satan's true character in the plainest terms: "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). Deception is his chief weapon. Paul warns that "even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14), so that his temptations often appear attractive and even religious. Peter adds a sober warning: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Yet the Bible never presents Satan as undefeatable. The book of Job shows him roaming the earth but acting only within the limits God permits (Job 1:7), accountable to the Lord. Believers are given clear instructions for victory. James commands, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). Paul urges Christians to "put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11). The enduring lesson is one of vigilance and confidence. Satan is real, cunning, and dangerous, but he is a defeated foe whose final end is certain. Through Christ's death and resurrection, and by standing firm in God's truth and armor, believers can resist him and overcome.
