The Sanctity of Human Life in the Bible
The sanctity of life is the biblical principle that all human life possesses a sacred worth, because the human being is created in the image of God: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:26-27). This imago Dei is the very source of human dignity. It is not talent, health, or usefulness that gives a person value, but their divine origin. This principle grounds the care owed to the unborn child, the elderly, the sick, the poor, and the marginalized. Psalm 139 celebrates God's knowledge of each person from the womb: "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb... your eyes saw my unformed substance" (Psalm 139:13-16). God presents Himself as the defender of the weak: "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute" (Proverbs 31:8). The sanctity of life rejects every ideology that would reduce a being's worth to productivity, output, or a supposed quality of life. It is not a political position but a theological conviction: from conception to natural death, all life reflects the dignity of the Creator. In the face of contemporary ethical questions, this principle invites us to ask in every circumstance: are we honoring the image of God present in this person? To defend life is to defend the image of God in the world.
