Progressive Sanctification in the Bible

Progressive sanctification is the ongoing work of God by which a believer, already declared righteous in Christ, is gradually transformed into His likeness throughout the Christian life. While justification happens in a moment and the believer is set apart to God at conversion, sanctification is a lifelong process of growing in holiness, putting sin to death, and increasingly reflecting the character of Jesus. Scripture presents this growth as God's clear will and gracious work in His people. The goal is unmistakable. First Thessalonians 4:3 states plainly, "This is the will of God, your sanctification." God desires not only to forgive His people but to make them holy. Second Corinthians 3:18 describes the process beautifully: as believers behold the glory of the Lord, they "are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another." This transformation is progressive, moving from glory to glory, never complete in this life but always advancing. This work is both God's and the believer's. Philippians 1:6 assures us that "he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ," grounding our confidence in God's faithfulness. Yet believers are also called to active obedience. Romans 6:19 urges us to present our members "as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification," and 2 Corinthians 7:1 calls us to "cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God." Sanctification rests securely on Christ's finished work. Hebrews 10:14 declares, "For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified," holding together the believer's settled standing and ongoing growth. First Peter 2:2 pictures this growth as nourishment: "Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation." For believers today, progressive sanctification offers both comfort and challenge. We need not despair over our remaining sin, for God Himself is committed to finishing what He began. At the same time, we are called to pursue holiness diligently, feeding on God's Word, resisting sin, and trusting the Spirit who transforms us, step by step, into the image of Christ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is progressive sanctification?
Progressive sanctification is the ongoing, lifelong work of God transforming a believer into the likeness of Christ. First Thessalonians 4:3 says, "This is the will of God, your sanctification," and 2 Corinthians 3:18 describes believers being transformed "from one degree of glory to another" as they behold the Lord's glory.
Is sanctification God's work or ours?
It is both. Philippians 1:6 assures that God "who began a good work in you will bring it to completion," yet Romans 6:19 and 2 Corinthians 7:1 call believers to actively present themselves to righteousness and cleanse themselves from defilement. God works in us, and we work out that grace in obedience.
How does sanctification relate to Christ's finished work?
Hebrews 10:14 says, "By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified." Our growth rests entirely on Christ's completed sacrifice. First Peter 2:2 pictures ongoing growth as longing for spiritual milk, so that believers grow up into the salvation Christ has secured.
